Queenless Starter/Finisher working on it's 5th round of cells
I sell out of my $16 per pound honey by January each year. I'm a hobby beekeeper in Omaha, Nebraska
Rewatching these older videos I have a question. 🙋🏻♂️ I hope you still answer questions on your older stuff, now that products like hive alive fondant are you still making homemade queen candy or are you using a patty of hive alive and several hundred cages??? Hope all is well, keep sharing your knowledge with us!! Thanks again little brother!!!
Hey Tim, I still make my own. I tried the hive alive fondant and the consistency isn't great for queen cages long term
Thank you. You just answered my question. I usually end up with about 50 per cent return.
You have great content, I like your channel a lot. You have a very good point here and I wish to ask you your opinion about how long we should expect a frame to last before some kind of inspection and refurbishment. Is/could it bee worth having an "in service data tag" on them. Many thanks for a just starting outa. Keep your wisdom flowing and long live the queen.
A good queen will lay a thousand or more eggs a day 🤣🤣🤣 you might wanna count the cells on one frame. Anything bellow 2k/day is just seriously malnourished bad queens lol.
If you find yourself with fake wax frames, do you need to remove the wax before applying beeswax? Or can you just put on a layer of beeswax?
Applying a good coat of wax over top of it will work just fine
As always great info...keep cool ❤ 🐝
One of the issues in play is the type of bee we are using now. 20 to 50 years ago we were using Italian bees that were bred to avoid propolis production; we are adding carniolian and Caucasian genetics, both of which we used to avoid due to high propolis production. Now are frames are getting glued into the hives and subsequently being pulled apart during hive manipulation.
T,ederim çok güzel olmuş ellerine emeğine yüreğine sağlık
I'm running the 2 gallon motherlode feeders with no ladder, I have 2 shims in them. Sometimes I open a smaller colony and there will be a layer of dead bees drowned in there. This has happened to me three times this year and both colonies were on the smaller side but not unhealthy in my opinion. I was wondering if thats just natural die off like you mentioned, or do you think something could be wrong? One colony it happened to has had it happen twice now and it was weird because I fed them two times with no problem before it happened again.
I don't really know the answer to that. Like you said sometimes it just doesn't add up. This is why I have gone to a couple of things long sticks with a small handful of straw to prevent bees falling in. Love frame feeders though
some of my wintered queens seem to be falling off and developing issues. have not figured out how to raise queens with our short summers yet. Y know anyone that might be willing to ship a half dozen queens to Alaska?
I don't right off. I know a guy who would ship you 28 queens for 25 bucks a piece. But 28 is the min I think. I suspect you don't have any fellow beekeepers nearby to group buy?
Great video Kamon, any news about hotel deals for the Bee Expo yet?
Do you need a ladder 🪜 to reach the black berries ?
What do you use in your smoker?
Thanks Damon - fun listening to you expound your bee philosophy!
What size holes do you put in the trickle feeders? I bought some 2.5 quarts paint mixing buckets I want to get out Monday
Three 1/16 in size holes for very slow trickle and more if you want faster consumption
Thanks for the split information
I sure hope you are splitting in the next week. I’ve been following step by step and my bees are ready. It’s my first split so I would prefer to follow your lead.
serious question, what is your electrolyte choice to stay in check this summer. I have 30 colonies and this time of year, I fight symptoms of dehydration every weekend. The classic Gatorade does not seem to help for me.
Hey Robert. This is the flavor and brand that I prefer for electrolytes. Cheaper than Gatorade too. This brand has other good flavors as well if you don't like orange. amzn.to/4bhKw2b
Great advice about feeding 👍👋 great video 👍
Thanks!
Thanks for your support of this series Patmanhoward!
Hi Kamon Greetings from Ireland…loving your videos..as a New bee keeper..1 hive that has already swarmed I’m learning loads…
HA kamon good vedio, are u trickel feeding your production hives so your queens will not shut down. doing this dearth even though they have food. have a blessed week
I've been eating blackberries for about a week while out surveying, it does offset working in the heat a little! Cutting the patties into strips is a good idea, getting ready to put some on and hopefully do a few double screen board splits coming up and maybe try Gus' flyback split as well.
Thanks for all the help. I plan on adding a frame of honey and setting up the feeder. I picked up a Kona Carniolan queen and plan on a split soon.
Hello Kamon. Even though I am an ex honey farmer in the UK 74 years old and still keeping bees after 60 + years, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, Thank you. I have a suggestion that you may find helpful. I notice with your smoker, that the hive hook is on the frount of the smoker, which means that you are liable to burn your hand when handling the frames. I have always put a hook on the top quater of my smoker bellows, which means that you can place it on the hive and the smoke is going away from you and is always at hand for fiesty bees. You won't believe how much more convenient it is to pick the smoker up and carry it. I prefer the old fasioned small brass single coat hooks with two srew holes in them. These are thin enough to fit between the frame lugs when the frames are closed. I would lay odds that once you have tried this, you will never want a smoker without one. Kind regards, Tony Marsh
😋Yummy, do you all make jam and jellies from the Blackberries? Thanks for sharing Kamon. 😲Look at that awesome Queen Rite dial on the front of that hive😁those are such a great tool. "Loosing bees is part of Keeping bees" Thank you for sharing the numbers on beekeeping Kamon, it makes for better new beekeepers. 👍Forewarned is Forearmed, beekeepers have to work in and with nature but we can make adjustments. I have 5 gallon buckets that I made into over time feeders, I'll start some of my trickle open feeding soon after my Blackberries. I'm right in the middle of the flow atm here in SW WA.
Hey, great video! I know it has been two years, but I am so interested in knowing how did your hive like the "failed" sugar brick recipe. Do you remember? Do you suggest any changes in the recipe? Thank you
Lucky you had plenty of rain. Here down south of you I control the rain. I put buckwheat seed down and it stopped raining lol
Thank you for showing we can feed appropriately for the season and for the health of the bees. It amazes me how many will be condescending to us or make comments like they never feed their bees like it's a badge of honor. Your channel has provided a wealth of information for us as we walk through this first season of bee keeping.
Hi from central Otago southern New Zealand 👋 🥝 😄 Yeah we get that in NZ too, kinda weird because all the successful commercial guys pack all the food into thier bees that they can to help them over winter. Yould think everyone would want to give Thier bees the best advantage,👍👋
Don't forget Mann lake sucks
Terimakasih sudah berbagai ilmunya👍🙏
Hi Kamon! What can I do for SHB if I just have typical langstroth hives and not the tray on the bottom to put diamatcuous earth in?!
Swiffer sheets
I heard peppermint candy's in the top corners
I love blackberries we will get some in a month
Here in Hungary, they buy honey in barrels from us for roughly $2/kg (2pounds~1kg). Our famous acacia honey costs $3.50 per kilo. Thanks to the immeasurable amount of artificial Chinese honey imported by the European Union.
Exactly. And they mix it and you can find jars in stores with small letter writing on labels. Country of origin EU + China.. which should be forbidden. Acacia = black locust in US. It's really a shame that price for it. Down south we started to have big problems to make a good crop of it. Used to be our best flow
Thank you'll for a great video
Very healthy hive, excellent presentation. We really appreciate your advice Kamom.
The blackberries are getting ripe in Ohio too. I just caught a wild swarm and am trying to learn everything in a hurry. Thanks for all the videos!
Great advice to be found here but I'm sure Kamon would agree it's a smart move to talk to local beekeepers in your area too, get wisdom from the local guys about your conditions 👍 all the best with your swarm😄 from central Otago southern New Zealand 👋
@@Manuherikiabeekeeping the local club meets Monday. I’ll be trying to get in with locals.
@@OhioGentlemenArms you'll find plenty of great advice and great help, beekeeping is awesome 😄 and Kamon has a lot of fantastic videos so keep watching too👍😆 Bob Binnie is another American beekeeper I follow, you might enjoy and I actually found out about him after Kamon recommended him in a video 😄 have heaps of fun and enjoy beekeeping 👍

FYI the store just has the gloves now
GO KAMON. I just bought some new hives and the top board does not have a hole in it. After thinking about it the hole is used for feeding not for ventilation as I was thinking. How on earth do the bees get ride of all the moisture from the evaporating nectar if there is no hole in the top of the hive?
Thanks ❤🐝🍯
Like👍 Indonesia 🐝🍯
Would you not recommend checkerboarding in a few of the new undrawn frames at this time? Seems like they might draw them out faster and might break the swarm stimulus if its present?
Frames....my obsession for five years now. Oh I can't wait to show the world what we've done!!! :)
Hi Kamon, I’m running a single deep brood box with a medium super on top that is nearly full. If I put another medium super with foundation on top of the medium super that’s nearly full and remove the excluder will they go up and draw comb quickly? Thanks!
Look at Kamon snapping steel like twigs. He probably welded it back together off camera with his laser vision.
Lol.
Great
Hi Kamon. I have one hive new this year with two double deeps up on the Cumberland Plateau in East TN. My question is how much honey does one hive need when going into winter? They are packing in the honey and pollen like mad right now and I would like to take one frame and extract it for personal use, but I don't want to deprive them if they will need it.
How do you keep track of hives condition? queens? etc you have a lot of hives? Nothing is labeled?
Where can i get the newspaper.
